Some readers will remember that I publicized my disappointment with the way Verizon issued it's "Not quite 4G" decision and forced my wife to buy a new phone. She chose Consumer Cellular, but I had already abandoned Verizon in favor of - you guessded it - Mint Mobile. I've been happy with their service, but now I'm wondering it the next big Orgy-of-Obfuscation will leave me without any choice but to pony up for the full-price offers.

I would suggest that you try CC with your wife. They offer a discount if you have two lines with them on the same bill. I had CC at one point, with two other family members on the plan. You can port your same phone number over to them. CC works off of either AT&T or T-Mobile network. The only reason I switched from CC, was because it cost me about $20/mo for their basic plan, and I found a T-Mobile plan that only bills me 10 cents/minute, and nothing more. I primarily use my land line, so this worked out to a cell bill that costs me under $5/mo, on average.
