How To Stop The Bleeding In Business Wireline
T-Mobile buys Mint Mobile for $1.5 Billion
FCC Proposes Rules To Block Illegal Text Messages And Close The "Lead Generator Loophole"
Message-ID: <20230314225019.GA1759235@telecomdigest.us> Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2023 22:50:19 +0000 From: Bill Horne <malQRMassimilation@gmail.com> Subject: How To Stop The Bleeding In Business Wireline by Andrej Danis (New York) and Clement Ogujiofor (Dallas) It's hardly breaking news that large telco operators face severe revenue and margin pressures in the business wireline segment. But the scale of the year-on-year revenue decline (between 3% and 8.2%) for products such as Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and Point to Point Ethernet (P2P), Private Branch Exchange (PBX), on-premise security, and Virtual Private Network (VPN) is sobering. This decline is forcing a reckoning for many of the biggest providers in the industry. https://www.mondaq.com/article/news/1291458?q=1803232&n=726&tp=7&tlk=5&lk=44 -- (Please remove QRM for direct replies)

The cash-and-stock deal, which includes two other brands, is worth $1.35 billion. T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert said Wednesday that the company would use its size and resources to "supercharge" Mint, which uses T-Mobile's wireless network and offers plans for as little as $15 per month. https://www.npr.org/2023/03/15/1163743380/t-mobile-buys-mint-mobile-ryan-reynolds
Moderator's Note
Some readers will remember that I publicized my disappointment with the way Verizon issued it's "Not quite 4G" decision and forced my wife to buy a new phone. She chose Consumer Cellular, but I had already abandoned Verizon in favor of - you guessded it - Mint Mobile. I've been happy with their service, but now I'm wondering it the next big Orgy-of-Obfuscation will leave me without any choice but to pony up for the full-price offers.

If the proposed rules are adopted, they will comprise the FCC's "first action to protect consumers from unwanted and illegal texts." If adopted, the proposed rules, together with earlier proposed rules that have already undergone a comment and reply period, would extend the existing Do-Not-Call Registry to cover text messages, and would require wireless service providers to:
  • Block text messages from numbers on a "Do Not Originate" list;
  • Maintain a single point of contact for texters to report erroneously blocked texts; and
  • Investigate and potentially block texts from a sender once on notice from the FCC that the sender is transmitting suspected illegal texts.
