Until a few minutes ago, I didn't know that something named “open RAN” existed, or what it is. I came across a story on the subject, and I’ve included the URL for the story, and one for a “white paper” that gives technical details, below. However, I think we telecom types need to talk - not about the technical topic, but about the political and regulatory environment that the “Open RAN” concept will create. “Open” standards which MIGHT allow communication - even short-range peer-to-peer communication - between disparate devices? The Congressmen who had to run for their lives on January 6th of 2001 will discard the idea out-of-hand. They don’t want, and will not allow, any change that removes control of the cellular network from the hands of government “EMCOM” specialists who are able to shut down cell networks in any area they choose. Communication without paying a monthly fee to the powers-that-be? Heaven Forfend! That's C-C-C-C-Communist! Look, in the corner! It's the ghost of Joe McCarthy, standing next to the devil in a J. Edgar Hoover costume! We must act quickly! • SpaceX plans to begin testing its Starlink satellite-to-cell service with T-Mobile this year, an executive of Elon Musk’s company said on Monday.
  • The market for space-based data services that go directly to devices on the ground, such as smartphones, is widely considered to have lucrative potential.
  • The company currently has “well over” 1 million Starlink users, SpaceX Vice President of Starlink enterprise sales Jonathan Hofeller said at the Satellite 2023 conference in Washington, D.C.

Neville Ray, president of technology at T-Mobile US, explained during a one-on-one interview at the MWC Barcelona 2023 event that the carrier’s lack of open RAN depth is due to timing. He explained that the technology lacked maturity when the carrier kicked off its expansive network upgrade program. “For us, we didn’t go down on open RAN path when we made our big vendor decisions three years ago,” Ray said. “The pace and scale that we were moving on, features and capabilities we needed, the ecosystem just was not ready. And the O-RAN guys will tell you that.” https://www.sdxcentral.com/articles/interview/t-mobile-us-open-to-open-ran/2023/03/ -- (Please remove QRM for direct replies)
