There’s just one catch: The town of 161, gateway to the state’s Black Rock Desert, already has broadband access, according to a government map showing that Bellevue-based T-Mobile provides service there. If that’s true, Gerlach is unlikely to be eligible for help from the once-in-a-generation program. https://www.seattletimes.com/business/verizon-t-mobile-overstate-claims-with-43-billion-at-stake/ -- (Please remove QRM for direct replies)

Sometime in the coming months, if it hasn’t happened already, an overlay area code — 350 — is being assigned to new lines issued by wireless carriers and landline phone companies. The California Public Utilities Commission in September announced it was teeing up the overlay area code for the 209 given the demand has just about exhausted all possible number combinations. https://www.mantecabulletin.com/opinion/local-columns/for-whom-the-bell-tolls-im-sorry-the-landline-youve-reached-is-no-longer-a-working-number/ -- (Please remove QRM for direct replies

Cable monopolies, whether legislated or market-driven, are common in most markets. According to a Consumer Reports survey, more than half of the respondents had a choice of two or fewer Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in their area. Given the lack of competition, it should not be surprising that these companies receive abysmal ratings for both service and value in the same Consumer Reports study. And while fiber technology options, such as Verizon FiOS and Google Fiber, fare better, fiber is only available to fewer than 20 percent of households. https://www.techlicious.com/review/t-mobile-5g-home-internet-offers-lots-of-promise-but-has-some-quirks/ -- (Please remove QRM for direct replies)
