Last week, the FCC announced several major initiatives the agency claimed were intended to help fight text message spam. One of them involves the creation of a reassigned number database, which would help marketers market more efficiently by ensuring that a target of marketing calls and text messages are receiving the messages they either opted in to, or opted out of. But another effort, only vaguely hinted at in the announcement, would further weaken the FCC's consumer protection authority over wireless cell providers, already greatly eroded after the assault on net neutrality. https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20181126/07441241104/consumer-groups-say-fcc-weakening-oversight-cell-carriers-under-pretense-battling-text-message-spam.shtml -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20181127222224.GA27670@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2018 17:22:25 -0500 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Verizon Launches 5G Lab for First Responders In 2019, the lab will give 15 different innovators the tools they need to develop public safety solutions using 5G wireless networks. by Phil Goldstein Wireless carriers have started to deploy 5G wireless networks and will continue to do so in pockets throughout 2019 as they move to broadly cover the country over the new few years. Verizon is aiming to use 5G to help not just consumers but first responders as well. Earlier this month, the company announced a partnership with Responder Corp to create a 5G First Responder Lab. The lab will serve as an incubator and testing ground for innovative technologies that use 5G and can be deployed for public safety use cases. Verizon says that it will then "deliver those solutions to public safety agencies throughout the country." https://statetechmagazine.com/article/2018/11/verizon-launches-5g-lab-first-responders -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20181127224019.GA27741@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2018 17:40:19 -0500 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: AT&T equipment failure affects Oklahoma sheriff's office The Major County Sheriff's Office [has] posted that AT&T was ex- periencing a major equipment failure, which resulted in a loss of service for many people including the sheriff's office. Emergency calls had to be routed through the Enid Police Department until AT&T fixed the issue. https://kfor.com/2018/11/27/att-equipment-failure-affects-oklahoma-sheriffs-office/ -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Wed, 28 Nov 2018
