Verizon did indeed throttle the data service on the Santa Clara County Fire Department's "unlimited" wireless plan during the emergency, but have argued that it had nothing to do with greed - it was a customer service problem. Say what you will about big corporations, they're not above throwing people under the bus whose "pay grade" wouldn't allow them into the corporate building, let alone the C-suites. https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/8/23/1790489/-FAIL-Verizon-s-bots-try-to-smooth-over-fallout-over-throttling-of-firefighters-during-wildfire?detail=emaildkre -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20180827230751.GA19851@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2018 19:07:51 -0400 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: After Throttling Firefighters' Internet, Verizon Makes Changes SACRAMENTO, CALIF. - Verizon rolled out changes Friday as state lawmakers said they were outraged to learn the telecommunications company had slowed firefighters' internet service while they battled what became the largest wildfire on record in California. Verizon said it removed all speed cap restrictions for emergency workers fighting wildfires on the West Coast and for those in Hawaii, where emergency crews were rescuing people from areas flooded by Hurricane Lane. https://www.voanews.com/a/after-throttling-firefighters-internet-verizon-makes-changes/4543478.html -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20180826144101.GA13833@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Sun, 26 Aug 2018 10:41:01 -0400 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: KS&G Files Class Action Lawsuit Against Global Tel*Link on behalf of Pennsylvanians August 21, 2018- KS&G has filed a class action lawsuit against Global Tel*Link Corporation, and DSI-ITI, LLC (collectively, "GTL"), on behalf of Pennsylvania residents who were incarcerated in correctional facilities throughout PA and utilized GTL's telephone services. GTL is one of only a few companies that operates in the corrections market, offering integrated technology solutions to 2,300 facilities and 1.8 million inmates in 50 states, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. By providing telecommunications services to Pennsylvania correctional facilities, incarcerated persons are able to communicate with their family, friends, and others. Faced with no competition, PA prisoners have no choice but to use GTL's phone service to communicate with their loved ones. To make matters worse, the rates and fees associated with making these phone calls is exorbitant. https://kohnswift.com/2018/08/22/ksg-files-class-action-lawsuit-against-global-tellink-on-behalf-of-pennsylvania-inmates/ -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ***** Moderator's Note ***** Full Disclosure: My last job before I retired was with a subsidiary of GTL.
