That works both ways: if the feds are determined and competent enough, they CAN trace a call. I have an account with a VoIP provider that happens to be in Europe, and I can send pretty much any calling number I want. Together with the FBI and the NYPD, we have been investigating the recent threats made on Jewish Community Centers in New York and around the country. Today, we have charged Juan Thompson with allegedly stalking a former romantic interest by, among other things, making bomb threats in her name to Jewish Community Centers and to the Anti-Defamation League. Threats of violence targeting people and places based on religion or race - whatever the motivation - are unacceptable, un-American, and criminal. We are committed to pursuing and prosecuting those who foment fear and hate through such criminal threats." ====== rest: https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/cyberstalking-charge-brought-manhattan-federal-court-against-missouri-man-pattern _____________________________________________________ Knowledge may be power, but communications is the key dannyb@panix.com [to foil spammers, my address has been double rot-13 encoded] ------------------------------ Message-ID: <dvtibc13ptobj3g9o5sn8r9d6dbncma2hv@4ax.com> Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2017 09:06:13 -0500 From: Pete Cresswell <PeteCress@invalid.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Re: With Jews nationwide watching, the FBI works to crack the tough case of a telephone culprit Per Bill Horne: >That works both ways: if the feds are determined and competent enough, >they CAN trace a call. I have always harbored a secret suspicion that if somebody threatened a highly-enough-placed politician that they would be in jail within days. Now it looks like we might see a test of that implied ability - albeit from a different source. -- Pete Cresswell ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Sat, 04 Mar 2017
