By Dan Gillmor A rule of thumb I follow is to never be surprised when a politician who vows to do bad things keeps his or her word. So as the Trump administration unfolds, it comes as no shock that Big Telecom is about to get pretty much everything it wants over the next four to eight years - and that the open internet, open technology in general, consumer welfare, and maybe even free speech are in serious jeopardy. http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/future_tense/2017/02/the_trump_administration_will_be_great_for_telecom_companies.html ------------------------------ Message-ID: <B7A6E8E0-EA8A-4991-B8EE-5C9F287725C5@roscom.com> Date: Fri, 3 Feb 2017 22:49:55 -0500 From: Monty Solomon <monty@roscom.com> Subject: FCC rescinds claim that AT&T and Verizon violated net neutrality FCC rescinds claim that AT&T and Verizon violated net neutrality Republican Ajit Pai halts Wheeler's net neutrality investigation of zero-rating. By Jon Brodkin The Federal Communications Commission's new Republican leadership has rescinded a determination that AT&T and Verizon Wireless violated net neutrality rules with paid data cap exemptions. The FCC also rescinded several other Wheeler-era reports and actions. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/02/fcc-rescinds-claim-that-att-and-verizon-violated-net-neutrality/ ------------------------------ Message-ID: <669D9928-25E2-4465-9032-0B466744A2D3@roscom.com> Date: Fri, 3 Feb 2017 01:04:48 -0500 From: Monty Solomon <monty@roscom.com> Subject: Hackers Use New Tactic at Austrian Hotel: Locking the Doors The electronic key system was infiltrated and a ransom of about $1,800 was demanded, an example of a malicious and prevalent type of modern-day piracy. http://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/30/world/europe/hotel-austria-bitcoin-ransom.html ------------------------------ Message-ID: <7C801694-B058-4FEA-8541-22482963324E@roscom.com> Date: Sat, 4 Feb 2017 23:00:25 -0500 From: Monty Solomon <monty@roscom.com> Subject: Judge Breaks Precedent, Orders Google to Give Foreign Emails to FBI A potentially major blow for privacy advocates occurred on Friday when a U.S. magistrate ruled against Google and ordered it to cooperate with FBI search warrants demanding access to user emails that are stored on servers outside of the United States. The case is certain to spark a fight, because an appeals court ruled in favor of Microsoft in a similar case recently. http://gizmodo.com/judge-breaks-precedent-orders-google-to-give-foreign-e-1792003911 ------------------------------ Message-ID: <3usu8clod6u871bbc3c1tahkudl1p60b7q@4ax.com> Date: Mon, 30 Jan 2017 12:11:59 -0500 From: Pete Cresswell <PeteCress@invalid.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Re: Ransomware killed 70% of Washington DC CCTV ahead of inauguration Per Monty Solomon: >https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/01/30/ransomware_killed_70_of_washington_dc_cctv_ahead_of_inauguration/ It would have been interesting to hear how all those machines got infected. -- Pete Cresswell ------------------------------ Message-ID: <A6E78A46-835B-42A8-B21E-CB00DB3BEA13@roscom.com> Date: Sat, 4 Feb 2017 21:44:44 -0500 From: Monty Solomon <monty@roscom.com> Subject: One word on the phone could cost you dearly One word on the phone could cost you dearly - Say yes to an extra piece of cake. Say yes to a friend who needs help. Say yes to a chance to travel somewhere new. But if you get a call from an unknown number and a stranger asks if you can hear him, definitely do not say "yes". http://www.bostonglobe.com/business/2017/02/03/one-word-phone-could-cost-you-dearly/D0oSg6BwrOX3WAIou0hH4K/story.html ------------------------------ Message-ID: <036F7D0B-4012-40A5-BA90-BED2C2DCA95A@roscom.com> Date: Fri, 3 Feb 2017 00:49:56 -0500 From: Monty Solomon <monty@roscom.com> Subject: Harold Rosen, Who Ushered in the Era of Communication Satellites, Dies at 90 Mr. Rosen's legacy as an electrical engineer and inventor is the roughly 600 geostationary satellites that handle TV signals, GPS tracking information and other data. http://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/02/business/harold-rosen-dead-engineer-satellite.html ***** Moderator's Note ***** The GPS satellites aren't in geostationary orbit. I don't know why this annoys me, but it does, and I'm disappointed that the New York Times doesn't take more care with scientific info.
