A happy and healthy new year to all! Some Bell System holiday ads: An ad from 1941 asking folks NOT to make calls on Christmas due to overloaded circuits: https://books.google.com/books?id=Zk4EAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA7&dq=life%20bell%20telephone%20christmas&pg=PA7#v=onepage&q=life%20bell%20telephone%20christmas&f=false These kinds of ads would continue throughout the war years until traffic reduced and Bell was able to get materials and labor to build more long distance lines. Back then long distance was inefficient as calls had to be manually "built up" by several operators along the route from origin to destination. Often circuits were busy and the call had to be held. Bell had a huge automation effort throughout the 1950s. Both local exchanges got dial, and long distance interconnections were automated. By the late 1950s Bell had enough resources that it could advertise for extra services and equipment: https://books.google.com/books?id=xlUEAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA155&dq=life%20bell%20telephone%20christmas&pg=PA155#v=onepage&q=life%20bell%20telephone%20christmas&f=false ------------------------------ Message-ID: <D100A75B-D4C9-4DC0-A531-F171A1592E76@roscom.com> Date: Thu, 29 Dec 2016 11:26:45 -0500 From: Monty Solomon <monty@roscom.com> Subject: How China Built 'iPhone City' With Billions in Perks for Apple's Partner A hidden bounty of benefits for Foxconn's plant in Zhengzhou, the world's biggest iPhone factory, is central to the production of Apple's most profitable product. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/29/technology/apple-iphone-china-foxconn.html ------------------------------ Message-ID: <637E657C-0431-41F6-A78B-1094BA8A5DE5@roscom.com> Date: Thu, 29 Dec 2016 19:56:49 -0500 From: Monty Solomon <monty@roscom.com> Subject: Choosing a Child's First Smartphone Choosing a Child's First Smartphone Both Android and iOS have parental control features and apps to help parents manage their offspring's mobile experience. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/16/technology/personaltech/choosing-a-childs-first-smartphone.html ***** Moderator's Note ***** OMG, like, fer sure, this is even more cloying and mawkish than the usual fluff pieces about buying your son his first jock strap or your daughter her first bra. "A Child's First Smartphone": what a lovely thought. It's never too early to start training the little future consumers how to be shallow and superficial and to think that their worth is determined by the dollar value of the gadgets in their pocket or purse. Accessorize!
