The 44-day strike, which began April 13, affected 39,000 workers nationwide. The parties are putting the four-year deal in writing, and union members should return to work next week, said Labor Secretary Thomas Perez in a statement. Full terms of the agreement weren't disclosed. http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/news03/nny-verizon-workers-may-return-to-work-after-strike-ending-deal-reached-20160528 -- Bill Horne ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20160530044554.GA12590@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Mon, 30 May 2016 00:45:54 -0400 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: From "Hoot & Holler" to "Hunt and Headache" When I was a kid, large junkyards used a private line service known as a "Hoot and Holler" to advertise their need for parts: whenever my dad needed a bumper or tailpipe for the VW, we'd go looking there, and I'd always stand at the checkout window, awed as the various yards responded to the brokers' querries - "Need a front quarter for a 64 mustang, need a rear bumper for a 59 Buick Electra, need ...". It was a private line, of course, and there was no signalling that I knew of, but more often than not, someone on the line would have what the barkers wanted, and they would chime in with some sort of code that must have identified which yard would get a private phone call. Yesterday, I went to Google and started looking for a kind of tile that my wife chose for our bathroom, but which is now discontinued. I typed in various combinations of "Settecento" and "200012", the manufacturer and model number respectively. Nothing. Nowhere. Plenty of Italian pages, and Interior Design sites that had fawning reviews from several years ago, but no current-day equivalent of the Hoot & Hooler junkyard lines from my youth. I don't know why: in this computerized age, someone has not set up a discontinued tile brokerage or warehouse. Am I missing something? -- Bill Horne ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20160530045839.GA12678@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Mon, 30 May 2016 00:58:39 -0400 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Verizon strike: victory at hand for union workers? Verizon Strike 2016 Update: A Deal Has Finally Been Struck; Victory For Union Workers At Hand? By Alexandra Park Recent news and updates regarding the Verizon strike for this year 2016 has finally made some improvements. It stands out that a deal has finally been struck between the union workers and the tech carrier giant. Along that line, notions of the victory at the palm of the union workers hand arise. The Verizon strike lasted a total of 6 weeks of strike. It also underwent 13 days of talks, along with the assistance from the government to put an end to the skirmish between Verizon and the union workers. Considered as one of the largest labor impasse and one of the biggest in the United Sates in recent history and both camps from the Verizon group and the two unions, Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), that represent the close to 40,000 workers on strike have taken a significant major step to actually come up with a tentative resolution, reports Christian Post. http://www.jobsnhire.com/articles/43548/20160530/verizon-strike-2016-news-update-deal-finally-struck-victory-union.htm -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Mon, 30 May 2016
