Locked out of your car or home, you pull out your phone and type "locksmith" into Google. Up pops a list of names, the most promising of which appear beneath the paid ads, in space reserved for local service companies. You might assume that the search engine's algorithm has instantly sifted through the possibilities and presented those that are near you and that have earned good customer reviews. Some listings will certainly fit that description. But odds are good that your results include locksmiths that are not locksmiths at all. http://www.nytimes.com ------------------------------ Message-ID: <25055d39-44ad-4712-a485-a77ec0b0e77e@googlegroups.com> Date: Thu, 28 Jan 2016 21:01:13 -0800 (PST) From: Neal McLain <nmclain.remove-this@and-this-too.annsgarden.com> Subject: Hate your cable company? Superfast, wireless Internet is coming (telecom) By Ben Fox Rubin, CNET, January 27, 2016 A startup called Starry thinks so and intends to take the place of your cable or phone company. The New York- and Boston-based startup, created by the folks who tried to shake up the television industry with the now-defunct Aereo, hopes to create fresh competition for major cable and telecommunications players that sell Internet. Starry plans to launch a wireless broadband service called Starry Internet at a lower price than current providers. The company plans to roll it out in Boston this summer and spread to more cities throughout the year. The eventual goal is to go nationwide. http://www.cnet.com/news/hate-your-cable-company-a-superfast-wireless-interne t-network-is-coming/?ftag=CAD1acfa04&bhid=25245872407054911039916544180245 -or- http://tinyurl.com/j4apo6t Neal McLain ------------------------------ Message-ID: <B991E210-0760-4E2E-B6FF-40D5C649D499@roscom.com> Date: Fri, 29 Jan 2016 09:07:46 -0500 From: Monty Solomon <monty@roscom.com> Subject: The Challenges of Digital Voting The Challenges of Digital Voting Information security expert Avi Rubin explains why we won't be voting on our smartphones anytime soon By David Pogue February 1, 2016 Scientific American http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/pogue-the-challenges-of-digital-vot ing/ ------------------------------ Message-ID: <2bbd4a2f-f2bb-40ad-a995-32d18a7fdb65@googlegroups.com> Date: Thu, 28 Jan 2016 21:05:42 -0800 (PST) From: Neal McLain <nmclain.remove-this@and-this-too.annsgarden.com> Subject: 60 Percent of U.S. Broadband Households Use OTT Services (telecom) By Diana Goovaerts, CED, Thu, 01/28/2016 Nearly two-thirds of U.S. broadband households subscribe to at least one over-the-top (OTT) video service, according to a new report from Parks Associates.
