Researchers from security firm Check Point Software said the malware installs more than 50,000 fraudulent apps each day, displays 20 million malicious advertisements, and generates more than $300,000 per month in revenue. The success is largely the result of the malware's ability to silently root a large percentage of the phones it infects by exploiting vulnerabilities that remain unfixed in older versions of Android. The Check Point researchers have dubbed the malware family "HummingBad," but researchers from mobile security company Lookout say HummingBad is in fact Shedun, a family of auto-rooting malware that came to light last November and had already infected a large number of devices. http://arstechnica.com/security/2016/07/virulent-auto-rooting-malware-takes-control-of-10-million-android-devices/ ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20160710155451.GA15970@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Sun, 10 Jul 2016 11:54:51 -0400 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Your Verizon Bill Is About to Go Up Your Verizon Bill Is About to Go Up - but existing customers can opt out. by Kerry Close If you subscribe to the nation's largest wireless carrier, your monthly cell phone bill may be getting a little pricier. Verizon announced Wednesday that it will hike prices on its plans, but also give customers about 30% more data. For instance, the price of the low-end "S" plan will increase by $5 to $35 a month, but will now include two gigabytes of data, double the amount it offered before. The cost of the next level, the "M" plan will also increase by $5, to $50 a month, while its data will surge from three gigabytes to four. http://time.com/money/4394575/verizon-price-increase/ -- Bill Horne (Filter QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20160710160124.GA15987@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Sun, 10 Jul 2016 12:01:24 -0400 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Verizon promotion of new plans on Twitter goes horribly wrong by Eli Blumenthal Following Wednesday's announcement of new data plans and higher prices Verizon took the logical next step of trying to advertise its latest offers. The nation's largest wireless carrier brought in celebrities like LeBron James, Jamie Foxx and Selena Gomez for short video spots to be shared on social platforms like Snapchat and Twitter. On Thursday, the company also bought the #IGotVerizon trending topic on Twitter in a bid to raise awareness. http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2016/07/07/verizon-promotion-new-plans-twitter-goes-horribly-wrong/86799580/ -- Bill Horne ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Mon, 11 Jul 2016
