Here in California the PUC made the bad mistake of deregulation basic
LEC rates as well as calling features, except for low-income-certified
lifeline rates. Rates are going through the roof for both at$t and
Verizon. Last month basic line acess went up $2.95 per month on the
heels of the same rate increase 1 year ago. If a subscriber wants only
Caller ID (which is now the most popular feature) it's an additional
$9.99 per month (at&t).
I suspect in-service LEC residential lines in the metro areas of
California have declined dramatically in the past couple of years and
will accelerate in the face of some very adverse media coverage of the
unending rate increases. Even some of the "Great Aunt Tilly's" will
bail out, not to VOIP but to wireless.
One more rate increase and your's truly will drop at$t for my present
Vonage service. I just prepaid Vonage for 1 year, which result in a
monthly rate of $20 per month for unlimited calling to 50 states, and 60
foreign countries, caller ID, voice mail, three-way calling, call
forwarding, and call waiting. And, I control via web interface whether
I want call waiting on or off.

In my view, SBC chose to assume the new name AT&T ( or at&t as you wish)
because it was a brand recognized worldwide. Very few people, even those in
the industry recognized "SBC". They might have recognized Southwestern Bell
Telephone, but the AT&T brand was just too well known to ignore. I have
worked internationally for about 12 years and most of the people I came in
contact with recognized the AT&T brand. And that certainly carries weight at
the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

Well, if they live in the middle of nowhere like my father does, they
still have to use dial-up so there's a high chance they know how it
works.
