By Jon Brodkin As streaming video continues to chip away at cable TV subscriber numbers, Comcast is making some of its Internet speed increases available only to customers that pay for both Internet and video service. Last week, Comcast announced speed increases for customers in Houston and the Oregon/SW Washington areas. The announcement headlines were "Comcast increases Internet speeds for some video customers." https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2018/04/comcast-wont-give-new-speed-boost-to-internet-users-who-dont-buy-tv-service/ ------------------------------ Message-ID: <5719D54F-627E-42C3-A55D-3C350439BCA9@roscom.com> Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2018 20:46:04 -0400 From: Monty Solomon <monty@roscom.com> Subject: Apple's Done Making Airport Routers, So Try These Instead Apple's Done Making Airport Routers, So Try These Instead CLOSE OBSERVERS OF Apple's networking products - surely they exist - know that the company hasn't updated its Airport line of Wi-Fi routers since 2013. That's so many iPhones ago! This week, the company made it official: It will no longer churn out Airport Express, Extreme, or Time Capsule routers. Rather than mourn the end of an era, take the chance to give your home Wi-Fi a boost with one of these newer, better alternatives. https://www.wired.com/story/find-a-new-router/ ------------------------------ Message-ID: <0826ED1B-A9AC-448C-AA83-412A156C2EDC@roscom.com> Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2018 21:27:54 -0400 From: Monty Solomon <monty@roscom.com> Subject: Phone maker settles charges it let partner collect customers' text messages Phone maker settles charges it let partner collect customers' text messages BLU phones sent a massive amount of data to firmware and data-mining provider. By Dan Goodin Phone maker BLU is settling charges that it allowed a China-based partner to collect a mountain of customers' personal data - including full content of text messages, real-time locations, telephone numbers, contacts, and installed apps - despite promises it would keep such details private. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2018/04/phone-maker-settles-charges-it-let-partner-collect-customers-text-messages/ ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20180502035415.GA1685@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Tue, 1 May 2018 23:54:15 -0400 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Unwired and wound up: Verizon customers in Novato, CA without cell service for 10+ days By Wayne Freedman NOVATO, Calif. (KGO) -- In historic Novato, Verizon customers say it feels as if they've returned to the stone age, also known as the 1990's. "No service," said Brian Clark, holding up his phone. "Either you make the call or they drop when you do," Kate Ibarra complained. http://abc7news.com/technology/unwired-and-wound-up-verizon-customers-in-novato-without-cell-service-for-10+-days/3415475/ -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Wed, 02 May 2018
