While working at the Pentagon in the 1960s, he instigated the creation of Arpanet - a computer network that initially linked together four US research centres, and later evolved into the internet. At Xerox, he later oversaw the first computer with desktop-inspired icons and a word processor that formed the basis of Microsoft Word. http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-39621198 -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <E87A84F4-1FDB-476C-8194-F41A142D9CD0@roscom.com> Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2017 11:54:06 -0400 From: Monty Solomon <monty@roscom.com> Subject: MAC randomization: A massive failure that leaves phone open to tracking Security flaws smash worthless privacy protection Analysis To protect mobile devices from being tracked as they move through Wi-Fi-rich environments, there's a technique known as MAC address randomization. This replaces the number that uniquely identifies a device's wireless hardware with randomly generated values. In theory, this prevents scumbags from tracking devices from network to network, and by extension the individuals using them, because the devices in question call out to these nearby networks using different hardware identifiers. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/03/10/mac_address_randomization/ ------------------------------ Message-ID: <E35DA1EA-7984-49BF-9C4C-8FE0DA6A5A2E@roscom.com> Date: Wed, 19 Apr 2017 09:42:09 -0400 From: Monty Solomon <monty@roscom.com> Subject: Anthem to data breach victims: Maybe the damages are your own darned fault Anthem to data breach victims: Maybe the damages are your own darned fault Hacked insurer seeks forensic exams of personal computers used by customers seeking damages http://www.networkworld.com/article/3187522/security/anthem-to-data-breach-victims-maybe-the-damages-are-your-own-darned-fault.html ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Thu, 20 Apr 2017
