No, they could script that. The FCC and IETF are working on crypto signatures on SIP headers on VoIP calls which would make it much harder to fake the calling info. That, and new rules that allow telcos to block calls from known spammers, are likely to help without ruining phones even more than they are now. A proposed law has a remedy In a spirit of optimism and it-can't-be-that-bad face-palming, here's info on a law that might offer some relief. - - - - - - You'd think phone and cable companies would be doing everything possible to help customers block annoying robocalls. Congresswoman Jackie Speier did. But she got a taste of the telecom companies' indifference recently while stuck at home trying to sleep off a nasty flu. http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-lazarus-20160419-column.html -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20170920160048.GA15838@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Wed, 20 Sep 2017 12:00:48 -0400 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Robocalls may be too far along to stop I have some bad news: robocalls may be too far along in their business model to stop. Consider this site, which offers 1-cent-per-call pricing: http://www.robodial.org/getstarted/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_NzBoZC01gIVBFmGCh3YrQTmEAAYASAAEgJc_vD_BwE ... and that's just for civilians. The big players have their own ISDN PRI lines, their own computers, and their own lobbyists, all programmed and ready to go. Sigh.
